Choosing a Cleanser for Your Skin Type

Why Your Cleanser Choice Matters
Cleansing is the foundation of any skincare routine — you do it twice a day, every day. Get it wrong and everything else in your routine suffers. A cleanser that's too harsh strips your skin barrier, causing dryness and irritation. One that's too mild leaves oil and buildup behind. The right match depends on your skin type.
How to Figure Out Your Skin Type
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and wait 30 minutes without applying anything else. Then check the mirror:
- Oily: Your face looks shiny all over, especially the forehead, nose, and chin (the T-zone).
- Dry: Your skin feels tight, looks dull, or shows flaky patches.
- Combination: Oily in the T-zone but normal or dry on your cheeks.
- Normal: Balanced — no significant shine, tightness, or flaking.
- Sensitive: Redness, stinging, or irritation appears quickly when you try new products.
Oily or Combination Skin
You need a cleanser that removes excess oil without going so deep it triggers your skin to produce even more. Look for a formula that clears pores and controls shine while leaving the skin barrier intact.
The Daily Cleanser works well here as your everyday wash. On 2–3 days per week, swap in the Exfoliating Cleanser — its dual physical and chemical exfoliation clears the buildup that leads to breakouts and congested pores.
Dry or Normal Skin
Your priority is cleaning without stripping. Avoid anything that leaves your face feeling tight after rinsing — that's a sign the formula is too aggressive for your barrier.
The Daily Cleanser is your go-to. You can still incorporate the Exfoliating Cleanser once a week to keep your complexion fresh — just don't overdo it, and always follow with the Moisturizer afterward.
Sensitive Skin
Less is more. You want a cleanser that gets the job done without a long ingredient list that increases the chance of a reaction. Introduce any new product slowly — start with once daily, see how your skin responds over a week, then adjust.
The Daily Cleanser is the right starting point. Hold off on the Exfoliating Cleanser until your skin is comfortable with the basics, then introduce it once a week at most.
The Bottom Line
For most men, the Daily Cleanser is the everyday workhorse and the Exfoliating Cleanser is the 2–3x-per-week upgrade. Skin type determines how hard you lean on each. If you want to try both alongside the full routine, the Essentials Skincare Kit is the most efficient way to start.
